Article: Urban Students Get To Study
At Living Library
In addition to regular classes with San Miguel CDC students, during summer and fall semesters, 10 – 15 Denman middle school mentors worked in Living Library Gardens and transformed landscapes. Students are responsible for watering, planting, weeding, cleaning, and assisting with younger San Miguel CDC students.
The OMI/Excelsior site continues to host New Door Ventures interns. This opportunity provides valuable green skills experiences for young adults and also gives our Living Library Team extra hands and ideas.

08/09 Living Library Branch Children's Program Updates:
Students at both Junipero Serra Elementary School and Junipero Serra Child Development Center participate in weekly Living Library Garden/ Ecolgy/ MultiArts/ Literacy/ Nutrition classes. Both sites have joined with A.L.L. to plant beautiful Living LIbrary Gardens. New additions to our Gardens were “tres hermanas” (corn, beans, and squash) plots, a new herb box, sunflower tunnels, and new paintings of butterflies and flowers.
Students have also been learning about nutrition and cooking and have prepared delicious juices, stir-frys, and pies from their harvests.
Students also created a new Living Library Garden Blog where seasonal updates and their photos are posted at http://alljserra.blogspot.com. This is an arts, science, and literacy program.

CHINATOWN BRANCH LIVING LIBRARY &
THINK PARK
More concrete and asphalt was removed in FIVE new areas of playgrounds of Gordon J. Lau Elementary School and Commodore Stockton Child Development Center in the heart of Chinatown, making way for new Living Library Gardens and greening spaces. Mayor Gavin Newsom came by during our May 30, Work & Play Day while parents, students, staff and Wells Fargo Volunteers shoveled 40 cubic yards of new composted soil, donated by NORCAL. Several areas were planted with sunflowers, squash, beans, corn and other flowers. Two of the areas have become California Native Learning Zones.
The student A.L.L. Blog continues to be a hit, as participants take pictures of their classmates working on garden projects and then reflect on the images and tell their story of the garden.
Our fruit trees planted last Fall (October 08), have been bearing fruit! Students have harvested Mulberrries, Apricots, Plums, Apples, Asian Pears, Bartlett Pears, and Persimmons.
With the fruit trees in their Living Library Gardens, students are able to witness and observe the annual tree cycle losing leaves in winter, regrowing them in the spring, developing flowers shortly after, followed by fruit in the summer and fall. They are also able to see how fruit is actually grown.
Another exciting project underway in Chinatown, is collecting stormwater in cisterns from rooftops and sloped schoolyards. We are developing multiple demonstrations of water collection and resuse. This is being funded by the SF Public Utilities Commission. Stay tuned for more details!

ROOSEVELT ISLAND LIVING LIBRARY & THINK PARK
UPDATE: Spring/Summer/Fall 09/10
A.L.L. is pleased to announce new program funding on Roosevelt Island from the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) beginning in the Spring, 2009 for our Living Library Garden/Ecology/MultiArts/Literacy/Nutrition Program at PS/IS 217 & Coler - Goldwater Hospital
Our new Living Library Teachers, Veronika B. Forero and Nate Kendall (also the Science Teacher at the School) have helped the students to build a robust outdoor classroom, gardens, and compost bins for all to use and learn from. Hundreds of PreK-8th grade students participate, year-round !
We also collaborate with Coler-Goldwater Hospital staff and patients, as well as many community members during the School Year, on Roosevelt Island Day, during the summer, and fall/winter seasons.
In early June 09, on RI Day, many children and adults worked together to cultivate and plant the Living Library Garden. Click here to view photos
On July 29, 09, A.L.L. hosted a community meeting with State Senator Jose Serrano and Assemblyman Micah Kellner to discuss A Living Library and its importance and value for Roosevelt Island. Read about July 29th meeting and Click here to view photos
On November 13, 2009, our lucky day, about 100 students participated with RIOC to plant New York Native Pin Oaks along Main Street across from the School. This is the beginning of our New York Native Learning Zone. In the spring, students will add understory and labels as artworks to this new learning landscape.
