History of Roosevelt Island Living Library & Think Park
We are planning
unique Learning Zones based on the ecological,
built, and multicultural resources of Roosevelt
Island - past, present, and future - that will link many assets
of the area including the public school, PS/IS 217, UN School,
Senior Center, Main Street, South Point, the United Nations,
the East River and other prominent features. Roosevelt Island
is a two mile long island in the middle of the East River
in New York City located across from the United Nations, blessed
with a rich history and diverse population.
With Ford Foundation funds, begining in 2002,
we began A Living Library Community Planning Process
that resulted in an exciting Roosevelt
Island Living Library & Think Park Conceptual Master Plan
for Southpoint, the 13 acre southern tip of Roosevelt Island.
During this process we began a hands-on Living
Library Garden / Ecology / Arts Program with
PS / IS 217, Coler-Goldwater Hospital, and other community
participants.
We envision that all of Roosevelt Island can
be A Living Library; showcasing
the diverse resources and places linked together interactively,
integrated with rich community programs - local and global.
